Hello Everyone,
My name is George. I will be picking up my 1987 Allante sometime tomorrow. The car only has 65k on it and is in very good condition. It even comes with a hard top.

This car will be for my dad. He is in his mid 60s and has never had a convertible. I picked this car out for him, because I know how much he will enjoy it.

A few questions....

The car's AC currently does not work. What are your recommendations? Top it off with R12 and pray that it doesn't leak out?

Convert it to R134a? What does that entail?

The wheels are not really my favorite, I think upgrading to a newer model of Cadillac wheel would really improve the styling of the car. Is the bolt pattern 5x4.53/5x115? Which other Cadillac models have interchanging wheels? Any recommendations? Not looking for 22 inch Escalade wheels, just maybe Seville STS wheels or something.

Any wise advise would be appreciated. I'm coming from the world of e34 BMWs so i'm no stranger to keeping a constantly problematic car in good running order. Bimmerforums helped me along the way, and I hope to build the same relationship with some of you, as I have with them.

Thanks!

George

Allante problems

Carnut has helped me so far. I just wanted to talk about the stuff about this car. I could get over the fan problem. Wire them direct iron a switch. Oil pressure sender = mechanical gauge I can live without abs. I'll just push harder. But I can't deal with it just stalling for no reason at about 50mph. Speedo will blink 244 mph then go down If you don't stop and take back off from park to drive the trans must be in safe mode. I have done a total tune up. Plugs, wires, cap, rotor, ignition module, coil , fuel filter. My old 71 eldo conv will take me anywhere I want To go with less problems & lots more joy

Want to see what happens when your brakes fail?

My ABS light was on. I had the car for about a week. I went on an exit ramp, and put the brake on. Only the fronts were working. I was sliding all over the place. Then I took my foot off the pedal and pushed it again. This time the pedal sank all the way to the floor. No brakes, smashed into a semi and totalled the car.

Broken ankle, fractured knee from applying the brake so firmly at impact.

The brake light was on when I bought it, and the computer screen flashed the ABS message. I figured it just meant that I wouldn't have ABS- I had no idea that it meant that eventually the brakes were going to fail.

I walked up and down the exit ramp picking up little pieces of my brakes. Somewhat stupidly, I wasn't wearing a seatbelt and the top was down, so when I hit the trailer I was immediately ejected onto the grassy median. It was a fair chance that I could have been decapitated, since the car was stuck UNDER the trailer and they had to lift the trailer up with a wrecker in order to pull the car out.

I've come to find out that these Bosch brake systems were some of the worst ever built. I would have never purchased this vehicle knowing what I know now.

1987 Allante retoration parts needed....Windlace

Well the 1987 is out of the brake shop and the interior is gutted. Waiting for the sound deadner to arrive for re-installation of the carpet.

I'm looking for the body side windlace to replace the aged and infirm... The color of the maroon trim inner has bleached out from sun on the windshield pillars and the passenger side has a rip in the rubber.

Has anyone got a lead on this material or a similar compatible windlace? Assuming this stuff was Pinninfarina there's no telling where it might be from or if it was common to other PF cars of the era.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Does anyone know where the low coolant sensor located on a 1988 Allante, in the
Radiator, or overflow tank?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Does check engine light come on when you turn key on? Failed smog... please help!

I failed smog today because the check engine light does not come on when I turn the key to the "ON" position. The tech confirmed the light bulb was good because he disconnected the EGR and the light then came on.

Can anyone please confirm this for me? Just turn your key to the ON position and see if the check engine light is supposed to illuminate. I think it is the very top light on the center of the gauge cluster. Thanks!!

'93 Allante runs rough after hot restart

I have a ’93 Allante and if I try to restart it after it has heated up to normal operating temperatures it runs rough; like it is running on less than 8 cylinders. It has a rough idle and does not accelerate smoothly. If the car is run for a while (maybe 5 to 10 minutes) the car “heals” itself and is back to normal. This never happens if the car is started cold and continually run. It’s not throwing any DIC’s that would seem to indicate the problem.

I also have some kind of intermittent electrical issue where the dash lights up and weird things happen, like the power seat adjusting by itself and the door chimer not stopping when the car is stopped. If I restart the car a few times these go away. The car has never been in a flood. It had an aftermarket radar detector built into the car and I’ve been unable to follow that wiring or even to find information on the detector. (Or maybe it is an NSA tracking device.) I figure that is a grounding issue but I don’t know where to look for bad connection either. (any suggestions on this problem would be useful too.) I’ve had this problem for several years, the first problem didn’t appear until a few months ago so my guess is it is unrelated.

It displays the following codes, as far as I know they are all related to my mysterious electrical problems and not the engine. They are P047, P058, P081, P095, P107, P137, B552, S011, S018, S021, S026 & S044.

Thought or suggestions are much appreciated.

1989 theft deterrent wont start

Hi,

It started or should I say it began just over a week ago, turn the key, nothing, 2nd or 3 try and it would start like normal and as if nothing happened, now it is more on the wont start side then the start side. after 4-5 tries the theft deterrent message shows up and I have to wait for 3 minutes before trying again. Sometimes it starts and sometimes it doesn't. I've tried both separate keys, makes no difference. I am trying to narrow it down, jiggle the key in the switch, adjust the steering tilt. One time I even tried to start the car from outside the vehicle (no start) and the theft deterrent message popped right up. Any guesses out there?

I need some help locating some relays within the car..... this car is a mess....... crash rebuild is how it was bought..... it was half put together it looks.....
heres where i am car sill start on ether but has no fuel , pump does not come on with the key......
I can not find the inertia switch anywhere in the car to reset, if i at least knew which color wires went to it and where it was I could bypass it to get the car to move, next is of all the fuse/relay blocks in the car which one has the fuel pump relay in it??? and which one is it??? all the lids for them along with the manual are missing. If I could at least find the FP relay I could again make the pump run n get this thing to move so I can get deeper into putting it back together.....
Thanks

93' Allante - Where to find an engine? Are they rebuildable?

Hey all,

I'm a mechanic, but not real familiar with the innards of the Northstar. Was driving around in my Allante' and noticed it making a solid, deep knocking sound. A good friend who is "n* knowledgeable" listened to my car and informed me that the engine had a sleeve loose, and it was knocking into the head. I will verify that seems to be accurate, as it's making two taps every crankshaft rotation. He claims they are a disposable engine that were never meant to be rebuilt, unless you had a ton of money to sink into them. This engine was installed 100k ago, when the original engine failed at 194k appx. It died a death of "oil pressure low, stop engine." Supposedly a cam had failed (according to diagnostic paperwork from the Cadillac dealership.)

So, for a person on a *tight* budget, what are my options? Nobody seems to be willing to rebuild it, and those that are willing to do the machine work for me and I do the reassembly myself seem to be charging too much. Supposedly this Northstar is specific to this car as it has some different mechanical specs.... What to do?

Thanks, Bill S.

I there a tutorial or FAQ on disassembling the seat switches on the '87-89 seats? Now that I've tackled fixing the power seat mechanism, I need to get into the switches, but am having trouble trying to remove the plastic cover from the rockers; seems stuck.

Is the "other" Allante site down or Something?

In my quest to keep our little finicky Caddies on the road by any means possible, I also visit another site with some regularity, Allante.net, however for the past couple of weeks my browser wont even let me in , posting a warning about site being harmful, or just not available. Is it Down?

Exhause manifolds interchangeable phase 1 & 2?

So my 88 is making more exhaust noise then it should from the back ( left side) of engine, I have access to a 92 for parts, if my manifold has a crack, would the 92 bolt on? I do not like the extra noise, I am a purest, and believe a cadillac, even the Italian one should be as quiet as when new.

Tranny woes

Today I noticed that Aurora started shifting from 2nd to 3rd later than normal. Upchange could be helped by releasing gas pedal a bit. Upon arriving home I immediatelly checked fluid level and found it wanting :( It took appr. 0,7 litres to bring the level to max (according the stick 0,4 is the amount needed from low to full).

On test drive it still seemed to be changing at higher rpm than previously.

Fluid did not smell burned and colour was normal.

So, have I cooked it? Is this something others have faced? Sign of tranny failing for good?

Tilting the engine forward ??? 1989 Allante.

Hello. Exactly where are the bolts that need to be removed? Are they accessible from the top side or the bottom? Do you just back them out somewhat or completely remove them? Are there any alignment issues on reinstallation? Thanks, Norm.

dying my seats and updating interior

Hi Gang, Just wanted to share that I recently starting dying some new seats I got for my 88. I am using Leather Magic, and I must say it is extremely easy, and the color match is great, ( and I'm actually changing the color of the seats I bought to that of my interior) I have an 88 that is in amazing condition, I bought it from the original owner like 8 years ago, and it has very high miles ( 205k) but still looks and drives amazingly, except that the original seats are showing their age, leather is hard, the foam had stiffened, and the seams have ripped. I spent the last few years softening up the leather in hoes of saving the original seats, but stumbled on a donor car lately with such a nice interior I couldn't pass it up. Unfortunately the doner is a 92, so the seats have a different pattern, and are made with less leather then the 88, it is also a different color ( beige) my 88 is Saddle Tan. So I guess I am doing a resto mod instead of actually restoring. but anyway SO excited that I will have soft luxurious recarros again for my little cad.

Help Please, 93 Allante Codes

Just bought a '93 Allante with 50k miles. Like it. Has two fault codes showing thru the DIC.

1. Shorted fuel pump circuit (code P019)

2. RSS resistor module short to ground / open (code S055)

Ride stays soft at any speed so I imagine the shocks aren't adjusting. Car runs perfect with no issues at all. What options do I have? Your help is very appreciated.

unknown fluid coming through the fire wall, interior lighting

Gentlemen, 2 items

I was doing some under dash work a week or so ago and after pulling off the under dash coverings, I found a rag tight to the firewall somewhere above the gas peddle. It was moist but not sopping. I have had the car since May and have not put in any brake fluid and the level is good based on what I see. I removed the rag and I then noticed after putting the coverings back on that the foam near the firewall was dripping fluid, oily.
Based on the location, it would say brake fluid, the only other fluid I can think of is that the car gets undercoated every year and this is regular seepage. What could it be?
Secondly, I have read through the forum that the reason the interior lights do not work when you open the door is because the light sensor might be u/s. The interior lights do work when you press the button on the dash. Any troubleshooting for this?

Mark
